Electric systems for transmitting mechanical power.-For the propulsion of ships, two electric motors M<1>, M<2> respectively driving propellers S', S<2> are fed by two pairs of controllable generators G<1> - - G<4>, each pair driven by a respective prime mover D', D<2>. The motors are controlled in known manner by varying the feeding voltage, by putting the generators in different seriesparallel groupings, and by cutting out one pair of generators. According to the invention, arrangements are made whereby one generator of a pair can be switched over to feed the motor of another pair, which latter may be put out of use, during low-power running. The field control of the switched-over generator is temporarily transferred to the controller belonging to the idle set.
