In a vehicle electric power transmission system propelled by D.C. motors fed through static rectifiers from a multi-phase A.C. generator, the generator is driven through gearing from a prime mover running at a different speed. The rectifiers, which are preferably of the semiconductor type, may be. combined with the generator, which is advantageously designed to give a non-sinusoidal e.g. trapezoidal waveform. The generator may have one or more multi-phase windings each of which may feed separate motor groups. Separate or selfexcitation may be provided for the generator, giving constant voltage. The generator cooling air may also cool the rectifiers.
