Abstract

600,280. Propelling vehicles. MASCHINENFABRIK OERLIKON. June 18, 1945, Nos. 15461, 15462, 15463 and 15464. Convention dates, June 17, 1944, Dec. 8, 1944, Dec. 22, 1944, and Jan. 11, 1945. [Class 79 (iii)] [Also in Group XXXIV] An electrically-propelled vehicle is also provided with a flywheel 1, driven by means of a motor-generator 3-3, whereby energy can be stored to drive the vehicle a certain distance without trolley wires, energy being extracted from the flywheel by causing the motorgenerator to supply current to the traction motors 5. The flywheel may run in a vacuum or in hydrogen alone or with some helium under a reduced pressure, to avoid overheating, and its bearing may be mounted in safety bearings (see Group XXXIV), whereby should the main bearing seize the safety bearings come into operation to allow the flywheel to run down. The current supplied to the vehicle is preferably 3-phase, but single-phase may be used to drive the flywheel and the motor-generator arranged to supply 3-phase current to the traction motors. For driving the flywheel a pole-changing short circuit armature motor is preferred, and asynchronous cascade motors with slip-ring armatures for traction, whereby a number of speeds may be obtained.
