Abstract
623,986. Transmitting mechanical power. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., and POHL, R. Oct. 13, 1944, No. 19812. [Class 38 (iv)] In an electrically propelled vehicle, a substantially constant high-speed inductor alternator 1 is driven by a reciprocating or rotary type engine and supplies current through a rectifier 2 to a driving motor 3 and a battery divided into two portions 6 and 7 which for starting purposes and speed control of the motor are connectable either in series or in parallel through a double-pole change-over switch 8. The alternator excitation is maintained substantially constant by having its field windings 4 and 5 connected across the batteries 6 and 7 respectively. A controller 9 is connected in circuit with the motor. The engine starter may be so coupled with the driving motor that the two may be started simultaneously, while the engine may be kept running to charge the battery when the motor stops, the engine being automatically shut down or the battery disconnected when the voltage of the latter reaches a predetermined value. Automatic arrangements may be provided for connecting the alternator and battery portions in parallel when the motor current exceeds a predetermined value or for over-exciting the alternator if desirable. The regenerative braking properties of the motor may be utilized for charging the battery when the vehicle is coasting. Specification 538,303 is referred to.
