Class 7(ii) In a power plant comprising a main compression-ignition engine, having a supercharging blower driven by an auxiliary engine and giving falling torque with rising speed over tne running speed range, cooling means is provided operated electrically at substantially constant speed. As described, an air fan or a water pump is driven at a fixed speed by an electric motor supplied by a direct-current generator driven by the auxiliary engine. The generator has an automatic voltage regulator to ensure constant output voltage. The auxiliary engine may drive a further direct-current generator which, in addition to. charging the general power-plant battery, energizes the field of the voltageregulated generator, which has an equal voltage output for driving a starter motor for the main engine, and a higher voltage output for driving the motor for the cooling means and auxiliary apparatus. Safety arrangements ensure that the higher voltage is not applied to the starter motor and in the application to the plant described in Specification 628,448, [Group XXVI], which comprises four main engines and two auxiliary engines, each of the latter drives a voltage-regulated generator supplying current for the cooling means of two main engines and switching means enable auxiliary apparatus to be connected with either generator.
