Abstract

627,361. Pumps ; regulating. RICARDO, H. R. June 23, 1947, No. 16499. [Class 7 (ii) and 7 (vi)] The torque of a compression ignition engine A is maintained at low speed by a charging blower B<SP>1</SP> which is driven independently by an internal combustion engine B2, a steam engine, or an electric motor, so as to maintain a constant charging pressure of at least 1¢ atmospheres absolute up to half maximum engine speed. The fuel pump of the engine B<SP>2</SP> is controlled by the delivery pressure of the pump B<SP>1</SP>, preferably through a servomotor C<SP>1</SP>, and a pressure relief valve C maintains the delivery pressure constant over the speed range during which the pressure can be maintained. At higher speeds a valve D enables the engine A to draw in charging air from the atmosphere. The fuel pump A9 is controlled by a governor A<SP>10</SP>.
