[Class 38 (iv).] Controlling power factor by auxiliary machines.-The power factor of a system supplied by an alternator driven by an internalcombustion engine is improved by a frequencychanger which also supplies the driving motor or motors of an engine auxiliary, such as a blower. As shown, the squirrel cage motor 5 driving the supercharger 4 of a Diesel engine 1 is supplied, whilst starting, by the alternator 2, but is subsequently fed at higher frequency by the frequency-changer 6, 7 which is supplied by the alternator 2 on the motor side and serves in addition to improve the power factor of the system supplied by the main alternator. The generator 6 of the frequency-changer may be D.C. or A.C. excited.
