Abstract

1,035,022. Electric power transmission for vehicles involving control of D.C. motors. DE WITT HENRY WEST. Jan. 3, 1964 [Oct. 4, 1962], No. 37599/62. Headings H2H and H2J. An electrically operated vehicle comprises an electric driving motor C and a battery 2 together with a pair of generators A, B driven by a single internal combustion engine, the field winding 6 of the generator B being connected between a centre tap on the battery 2 and a slider 7 of a potentiometer 8 connected across the battery and the armatures of the generator B and the motor C being connected in a series circuit with the battery 2 so that movement of the slider 7 from end to end of the potentiometer 8 causes a variation in the generated voltage of the generator B to give full buck to full boost of the battery voltage thereby controlling the motor C from standstill to full speed. Regenerative braking of the motor C is obtained by moving the slider 7 so that the voltage applied to the motor is less than the back E.M.F. The generator A provides the charging source for the battery 2 and if the load on the I.C. driving engine be such as to cause it to reduce speed so that the generated voltage of the generator A is below the battery voltage the generator A will motor and assist the I.C. engine. Other embodiments show arrangements in which the motor C is supplied only by the generator B and in which the generators A, B are combined to form a composite element.
