Lubricant conveyed by fluid; lubricating by solid lubricant. - A spring-pressed piston c arranged in a cylinder a disposed beneath a hopper b containing flaked graphite or other lubricant carries a grooved or fluted stem e which projects through the passage between the cylinder and the hopper into the latter, a port f in the upper part of the cylinder being connected by a pipe r to the induction system of an internalcombustion engine, whereby the reciprocations of the stem due to the fluctuating suction action cause lubricant to be fed from the hopper into the cylinder, whence it is carried, along with air entering through a port h, to the engine. The ports f, h, which are controlled by valves g, i, are so arranged that, while the port f is never closed by the piston, the port h is closed when the engine is running light, with a subsequent high vacuum; at such time a valve d! farmed at the lower end of the stem e also closes the passage between the cylinder and the hopper. In the lower position of the piston c, a stem k depending therefrom abuts against an adjustable stop j. An annular groove n around the stem e communicates with the atmosphere by a valvecontrolled passage o, whereby excessive feeding from the hopper is prevented.
