Abstract

289,633. Norton, B. April 26, 1927. Valves controlled by pilot or relay valves.- In a coal-washing jig of the kind in which water is caused to pulsate through perforated plating by means of compressed air, the supply of air is automatically regulated in accordance with the supply of coal to the washer box. A relief valve in the air supply pipe is opened when a pivoted flap in the coal shoot falls. The top side of a diaphragm 36 on the spindle of the relief valve 39 is connected to the compressed air supply and the under side is connected with the atmosphere through a pipe 44 and ports 41 when the flap (not shown) is in its raised position. The flap, in falling, raises the pilot valve 40, which closes the ports 41, and connects the under side of the diaphragm to air pressure through pipes 33, 35, and 44. The valve 39 opens as the pressure on each side of the diaphragm equalizes. A delayed action device comprising a bye-pass 51, throttle valve 52, and check valve 53 allows the pressure beneath the diaphragm to rise slowly and fall quickly. In a further modification the lower side of the diaphragm is always connected to atmosphere, and the upper side, which is normally under pressure, is connected to atmosphere when the flap falls.
