Alkali titanates; double salts. - Titanium compounds soluble in organic acids and dilute mineral acids are obtained by heating an hydrated oxygenated compound of titanium, such as metatitanic acid or basic titanium sulphate, in the presence of alkali at a temperature below the fusion point of the reaction mass, say, at 150‹ C. The titanium compound may be made into a paste with water prior to being heated with alkali, which may comprise potassium or sodium hydroxide or carbonate. From the products, double salts of titanium and alkali with organic or inorganic acids, such as titanium sodium tartrate, titanium sodium lactate. titanium potassium oxalate, or titanium sodium sulphate, and mixed salts, such as those of titanic, oxalic, and tartaric acids, or of titaric, oxalic, and lactic acids, may be obtained by the action of the necessary acid or mixture of acids. Examples are given of the treatment with potassium hydroxide and carbonate, and of the production of titanium potassium oxalate from the products.
