Abstract

N4-Dicarboxylic acid derivatives of p-aminobenzene sulphonamides are obtained by treating aqueous solutions of the alkali salts of the sulphonamides with dicarboxylic acid anhydrides without the application of heat. Examples show the reactions of phthalic and succinic anhydrides with the sodium and potassium salts of sulphanilamide and sulphathiazole. Other suitable anhydrides are glutaric, adipic, suberic, sebacic, maleic, naphthalic and malonic (carbon suboxide). The products contain a free carboxylic group. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 is not limited to reaction in the presence of water. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
