Abstract

502,194. Lead dioxide. JOHNSON, G. W. (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.) Oct. 20, 1937, No. 28599. [Class 1 (iii)] Lead 'dioxide is produced by reacting lower lead oxides, hydroxides, or carbonates or other salts capable of forming lead oxide or hydroxide under the reaction conditions with oxygen in the presence of an aqueous alkali solution containing at least 20 per cent of alkali hydroxide. The process may be carried out at room temperature or at temperatures up to 350‹ C., at normal or elevated pressure, e.g up to 30 atmospheres, and with oxygen or air. Any plumbate formed may be hydrolyzed by heating with water. The examples describe the treatment of a lead oxide-lead dioxide mixture obtained in the regeneration of chromic acid, of lead hydroxide obtained by hydrolysis of lead sulphate, and of lead oxide obtained by heating basic lead carbonate. The process may be effected in a trickler tower.
