Abstract

Acronautical compasses.-A compass for use on aircraft to enable a given course to be steered in relation to the ground has a transparent base through which the ground can be observed and a system of sighting wires or vanes which can be adjusted in relation to the magnet according to the course to be followed. The magnet a is supported on a pivot in the compass bowl which is provided with an azimuth scale h and the wires b are connected frictionally with the magnets by a spring c. For adjusting the wires, a toothed wheel d can, by depressing a knob i be brought into engagement with a similar wheel on the pivot cup. The spindle of the wheel d passes through a square-section rod f having a projection g which makes contact with a similar projection on the boss carrying the wires when the wires are pointing to the zero of the scale h. To set the wires, the knob i is depressed and turned until the two projections engage. It is then further turned until the north pointer of the magnets is opposite the desired course in the scale h. The knob is then released and the compass is used by observing objects on the ground through the transparent base and steering the craft so that the apparent direction of movement of such objects is along or parallel to, the wires b.
