Producer.-Light hydrocarbons are obtained' by the distillation and gasification of coal and the like in a chamber 1 below which is an ash pit 2, air being supplied through pipes 6, 6<1> and steam through pipes 7, 7<1> the hydrocarbons passing off through a pipe 4 to the condensers. Heavy condensates are returned to the chamber through a pipe 9.
