Abstract

286,872. Gazelle, M. S. Feb. 28, 1927. Heating by edectricity.-In an electric water heater of the type in which the circuit is closed by a switch operated by a piston actuated by the pressure of the entering water a catch is provided by means of which the switch is held closed after the water has been turned off until the piston has moved so far that the switch element can be moved by a spring through a distance sufficient to prevent arcing. The water passes by a nipple 57 into a cylinder 55 containing a piston 60, whence it issues through a pipe 54 and passes through concentric tubes 16, 17, 12, 13, between which is arranged the heating element 23, the water spaces between the tubes communicating through passages in the base 8 of the apparatus. The water raises the piston 60 against a spring 62 and the piston rod 59 raises a sliding rod 75 carrying contact plates 78, 78<1> and terminals 79, 79<1> so as to close the circuit through plates 69, 71, and a cross-piece 67. When the circuit is closed a finger 87, Fig. 2, on the rod 75 engages with a pivoted catch 85, so as to hold the switch closed against the pressure of a spring 80. When the water is cut off the piston 60 falls and the rods 59, 75 separate until a finger 88 on the rod 59 engages with an inclined face 89 on the catch 85 so as to force the catch back against a spring 90 and release the rod 75.
