Thermal switches; cases; contacts.-In a fire alarm of the expanding capsule type, an arm f carrying the movable contact f<1> is carried by a spring arm f<2> connected to one terminal of an electric circuit, and engages the capsule e with a pressure which is variable, by means of a spring h and screw i, to vary the temperature at which the alarm operates. The capsule is removably held in guides d in the alarm casing a, which may have a hinged lid. To provide for testing the alarm, a spring plungex k can force down the second contact arm j, or an electromagnet m in an auxiliary circuit may be arranged to raise the contact arm f, the latter being of soft iron. Alternatively, the arm j may be forced down by a bell-crank lever operated bv a cord. In a modification, the pressure of the arm f on the capsule is adjusted by the action on the spring h of a cam on a rotatable spindle. In another modification, Fig. 5, the casing a is rendered air-tight for use in explosive atmospheres. The capsule e is cemented over an opening in the casing. The pressure of the arm f on the capsule is adjusted by a cam n which is rotated by a ratchet o and spring-held pawl o<1> operated by an electromagnet p which may be repeatedly energized. An electromagnet m is used for testing the alarm.
