Density separators.-A centrifugal separator, more particularly for pulp containing finely divided solid particles, has a chamber with unperforated walls provided with an annular slot of constant width which can be closed by an annular slide and packed with the solid particles. The hollow shaft a, in the form of apparatus shown, carries the parts d, e and the parts d<1>, e<1> which form the chambers b, c respectively. Annular gaps f, f<1> are left between the rims, and tubes r are provided for the introduction of the material into each chamber. A sleeve on the shaft between the chambers carries two trough shaped plates g, g<1> the rims of which are adapted to close the annular gaps f, f<1> in the separating chambers. The central feed pipe t is divided into two parts by a longitudinal partition m, and stops l, l<1> are placed in the ducts so formed, so that one duct is used to supply the chamber c with material. When the upper chamber b is in use the sleeve is raised so that the rim of the plate g closes the gap f. The material flow into the chamber b and the clear liquid escapes through the openings k while the solids build up in the gap f. When it is desired to discharge the solids, the sleeve is moved downwards to open the gap f and to close the gap f<1>. The supply of material is also changed from one duct to the other, and separation is effected in the chamber c.
