Abstract

285,636. Sidwell, F. A. Feb. 1, 1927. Propelling.-In driving gear for the propellers of aircraft using a lay shaft, the propeller shaft 8 is concentric with the crank shaft 2, or an attachment thereto, and a bearing 5 is interposed between the toothed wheel on the propeller shaft and the driving wheel 3 on the crank shaft. A second bearing 4 is provided on the inner end of the crank shaft extension and a second bearing 9 together with a bearing near the propeller carries the propeller shaft. The composite wheels 11, 12 forming the lay shaft are carried by two bearings, one 13 supported on a fixed axle 15, the other 14 carried by the gear casing. The parts 1, 6, 10 of the casing are shaped to form spigots and sockets to allow assemblage. In a modification an extra bearing is supplied for the crank shaft and is placed inside the bearing such as 5 between the crank and propeller shafts. In other arrangements the lay shaft wheels are carried by bearings 41, 42, Fig. 4, supported by the hollow axle 43. The crank shaft is carried by a bearing 31 in the casing and by a spigot 37 received in the hollow propeller shaft. The driven wheel on the propeller shaft is supported by a bearing 38 placed under the toothed periphery or by a bearing 44 surrounding the shaft. Fig. 4 showing both arrangements.
