Abstract
543,851. Propelling aircraft. MILNER, H. L., and McNAB, N. S. Feb. 7, 1940, No. 8892/41. Divided out of 538,621. [Class 4] Two oppositely rotating, coaxial shafts carrying airscrews and extending from the same end of the engine that drives them. have a bearing upon a stationary tubular axle disposed between the shafts. As shown the two propellers are mounted on shafts 7, 15 having gears 6, 14 driven from an engine shaft 3. A pinion 5 on the engine shaft gears directly with the gear 6 and a pinion 4 drives the gear 14 through an idler gear wheel, not shown. A tubular shaft 12 having an outer flared extension 19 and an inner flange 13 is secured to the engine casing 17. The shaft 7 is supported at its rear end by bearings 9 10 and at a point widely separated from these bearings by a roller bearing 11 supported by the flared extension 19 of the tubular shaft 12. The shatt 15 is supported by a roller bearing 18 upon the shaft 12 and by bearings 16 upon the engine casing 17. A screw thread 24 upon the shaft 7 working closely within the rear end of the shaft 12 forces oil towards the bearing 11 from which is flows through ducts 26 to the bearing 18. Oil seals 25, 27 prevent escape of oil. In a modified construction the bearing 11 is arranged in the same plane as the bearing 18.
