Abstract

508,501. Propelling aircraft. BARBAROU, M. J. B. Dec. 31, 1937, No. 36259. Convention date, Jan. 13. [Class 4] Means for propelling aircraft comprise two airscrews mounted on coaxial shafts disposed unilaterally of and geared to one end of a main shaft connected to the aero-engine and supported within a tubular casing secured at its ends to a reduction gear housing containing the coaxial shafts and to the engine casing ; a sleeve surrounds the main shaft and is connected to the shaft by collars and a frictionclutch device. As shown, the airscrews 22, 23 are driven from the aero-engine 1 which is disposed to the rear of the cockpit in order to increase the pilot's field of vision and permit firing a gun through the airscrew shaft. The engine drives a shaft 8 through a pinion 7. The sleeve 10 surrounds and is fixed to the shaft 8. Conical linings 12, 13 are secured respectively to the sleeve and pinion 7 which have differing moments of inertia. A split ring 11 is operated by centrifugal force to co-operate with the linings and damp torsionaloscillations in the shaft 8. The shaft 8 drives, through a pinion 9, a shaft 16 which through pinions 17, 18, 19 and 20, 21 and a further pinion, drives the airscrews in opposite directions through concentric hollow shafts 32, 31. The shaft 32 rotates in a bearing 24 and is centred on rollers 26 and the shaft 31 rotates in a bearing 28a. A gear-wheel pump 34, 35 draws oil through the conduit 36 from the interior of the housing 5 and delivers it through conduits 38, 39 to a radiator 40 whence it passes through a main 41 to a reservoir. A second gear-wheel pump 42, 43 draws oil from the reservoir through a union 44 and delivers it through conduits 45, 46 to the airscrew shafts and also through a tube 47 to the bearings 28, 29 of the shaft 16. Packings 50 and plug 52 prevent leakage. Oil accumulating in the casing 3 can drain through conduit 53 into the interior 37 or pass rearwardly to the engine casing 1. The means for damping torsional oscillations may comprise conical rubber washers compressed between the sleeve and shaft..
