Cellulose acetates; preparatory treatment of celiulose.-For the manufacture of cellulose acetates, the cotton is first treated with hot acetic acid vapours while thoroughly agitating the mass, is allowed to cool, and is then mixed with an acetylating mixture containing a limited proportion of acetic anhydride, the remainder of the anhydride being added at intervals and after allowing equilibrium to be established between the cellulose ester and the bath after the preceding addition. The example refers to the use of sulphuric acid as the catalyst, but other catalysts may be employed; and the preparation of nitrocellulose acetates is referred to. Specifications 21628/01, 19107/06, 20977/11, and 13 96/14 are referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 263,938.
