A current controlling device arranged in an adapter to be inserted in a lamp holder 10 is mounted to move bodily relatively to the casing 26 of the adapter. The member 16 that contains the switch &c. slides in the casing 26, between a flange 32 and an annular projection 33, a slot 34 coacting with a projection 36 to position the member so that its contacts 21, 22 engage the spring contacts 13 of the lamp holder 10. On the opposite face of the member 16 are contacts 23. 24 that engage the contacts of a lamp or connector inserted in the adapter 26. For intermittently lighting a lamp the casing 16 contains a thermal switch comprising a bimetallic strip 47 surrounded by a heating resistance 56 and carrying a contact that coacts with a fixed contact 49. On reaching a certain temperature the strip closes the contact, short-circuiting the resistance and lighting the lamp. In order to compensate for general rise of temperature the strip 51 that carries the fixed contacts 49 may be bimetallic. The resistance consists of several layers of fine enamelled wire wound upon an insulating cloth wrapping on the strip 47, each layer being treated with a heat-resisting varnish.
