Feeding webs.-A brake for the supply roll of a printing machine comprises one or more belts engaging the surface of the roll and having one end secured to a fixed support and the other end wound on a spool automatically rotated by a weight or other energy storing device as the web is unwound. A pair of belts 11 are secured, either directly or through the medium of coiled springs 22, to a fixed support 18 and, after passing round the supply roll 10 and idler rollers 34. are wound on spools 20 on independent shafts 21 each provided with winding-means comprising a weighted cable 31 wound on a drum 28. As the diameter of the roll 10 is reduced the belts 11 are wound on the spools 20 and, owing to the increased diameter of the wound portion of the belts, the tension of the belts is gradually reduced. The belts are adjustable laterally, the spools being splined on their shafts 21 and the attachments to the support 18 being slidable thereon for this purpose
