Abstract

309,819. James, H. V. Sept. 27, 1928. Feeding webs.-A web-roll brake for a rotary printing - ma chine comprises one or more continuously driven endless belts passing round pulleys anchored above and below the roll and sc disposed that the roll projects well into the path of the belt, means being provided to take up the slack of the belt as the diameter of the roll diminishes. One of the pulleys may be driven by a mechanical coupling to the machine or electrically by the means described in Specifications 279,240 or 300,111 so that the belt assists the unwinding of the web during the speeding up of the machine. A number of narrow belts 3, Fig. 1, pass round pulleys 2 below the roll c and round pulleys 1 above the roll, spring-pressed pulleys 4 being provided to keep the belts taut. The bearing of the pulleys may be carried by the floor and ceiling or may be carried bv a cast iron frame arranged near the roll. Pulleys 8 carried by arms pivoted on a shaft 10 may be provided to serve as hooks to hold back the belts to facilitate the insertion of new rolls of narrow width. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 310,335.
