Abstract

331,937. Quick, C. G., and Digby, C. B. April 17, 1929. Feeding and registering webs.-The tension of the web passing to a printing machine is controlled by one or more endless bands engaging the web roll and frictionally driven thereby, a brake being provided to retard the movement of the bands. The roll and one or more spare rolls are carried by chains mounted on a carriage which is adjustable for side register of the rolls, and poweractuated means are provided for advancing the chains to carry the rolls successively to feeding position. The web roll 9 in use engages and drives a pair of side-by-side bands 21 passing round rollers 22, 23 carried by frames freely mounted on a shaft 25. The rollers 22 are fast on the shaft 25 to which is also fixed a brake drum 27 engaged by brake blocks 28 on adjustable levers 29, 30 whereby the braking effect of the bands and the consequent tension of the web may be adjusted. The roll and a reserve roll are carried by bearings 7 on chains 4 mounted on a carriage 1 which is adjustable on rails 3 for side register of the roll by a screw 18 rotatable on a fixed bracket 19. Pivoted levers 11 are provided at the front of the carriage adapted to lift the spindles of new rolls mounted on a truck 12 to allow the spindles to run over a track 10 into the bearings 7. The chains may be driven by an electric motor and hooks 17 are provided at the rear end of the carriage to receive the spindles of expired rolls.
