Abstract

235,648. Winpenny, A. R. March 21, 1924. Winding-machines.-Apparatus for unwinding a paper or other web from a reel and winding it upon another reel comprises a driven main cylinder in contact with the take-up reel and a secondary cylinder in contact with the let-off reel and driven frictionally from the main cylinder, the reels being mounted on carriages operated by fluid pressure to hold the reels in contact with their cylinders. The apparatus is particularly applicable for winding remnants of paper from the supply rolls of printing machines to form full sized rolls but may be used for rewinding badly wound rolls. The let-off reel B and take-up reel B<1> are mounted in wheeled carriages F, F<1> running on rails H and are yierdingly pressed by fluid pressure cylinders J, J<1> into contact with a secondary cylinder D and a main cylinder E which is driven from any suitable source of power. The cylinder D is driven frictionally from the cylinder E by a belt K, the slip of which can be adjusted by a jockey pulley K' to tension the web. The speed of the cylinder D is slightly less than that of the cylinder E when the belt is tight. The web passes from the reel B over a spring mounted roller C and round the cylinders D, E as shown. A web damping apparatus M may be provided. The Provisional Specification states also that the apparatus may be used for winding fabrics.
