[Class 140.] A machine for treating a gum-coated paper web to prevent curling of the corners of sheets cut therefrom, comprises means for supporting a roll of the gummed web, a rewind mechanism for the web, web guide rollers parallel to the supply and rewind rolls, and a pair of blades inclined to one another and to the run of the web with which are associated guide rollers which cause the web to be sharply bent over the edges of the blades to break the film of gum and destroy its surface tension. The supply roll 23, Fig. 1, having the gummed surface of the paper outside is mounted in bearings 12 one of which is movable by a screw 15 for slight angular adjustment of the roll. Lateral adjustment of the roll is effected by a blade 19 engaging a grooved collar 18 on the roll shaft and operable by a screw 21. The web passes over guide rollers 47, 48, 50 .. 53 to a rewinding shaft 24 on which the web is wound by a friction drum 28 driven by toothed gearing 29 and a belt 30 from a power shaft 31. A pressure roller 32 rests on the roll 46 and may be raised by cords 34 wound on drums 36 on a shaft 37 operable by a hand crank 41 and gearing. The roller 32 may be supported in a recess 45 in the guide bracket 26 during the attachment of a web to the winding shaft 24. Between the guide rollers 50, 51 are arranged a pair of blades 54, 55, Figs. 1 and 5, inclined to each other horizontally and vertically and on opposite sides of each blade are a pair of rollers 56 .. 59, adapted to cause the web to be bent sharply over the edges of the blade to break up the gum coating.
