Roller and sheet recording apparatus; feeding and driving means. - Paper webs and the like such as the film strip in an electric oscillograph are wound at uniform speed from one reel on to another by a common driving member which engages the web and couples and drives the reels, and consists of a rigid driving roller or cylinder, or an endless driving belt or band around the reels. The reels 13, 14, Fig. 1, are coupled together and to the driving-pulley 18 of a motor m by an endless band 15 which passes around them, the unwinding web passing below the upper portion of the band from the reel 13 to the reel 14. Spring- controlled tensioning-rollers 16, 17 bear against the lower portion of the band. In a modification of this form, the reel spindles are geared to the spindles of a secondary pair of parallel winding and unwinding reels, which may be driven at a different speed. Fig. 3 shows a motor-driven coupling-roller 26 with its spindle guided within the forced ends of pivoted arms 27, 28, the roller thus being maintained in contact with, and also driving, the winding and unwinding reels 29, 30, a web-tensioning roller 31 being also provided. In a modification the reels are journaled side by side within a frame with their axis parallel. and a rotating coupling-roller, mounted below but in contact with each of them. has its ends journaled within an arcuate slot in the frame, the web passing from the upper portion of one reel to the upper portion of the other. The ends of the coupling-roller are moved automatically along the slots as the diameters of the reels vary. In another modification, Fig. 7, the ends of the spindles of reels 29, 30 are located within the forked lower ends of arms 51, 52 pivoted at 50, and the two reels rest upon the interior of a rotating cylinder 53 which is driven by friction rollers or gear wheels 54, 55. Counterbalance weights are provided at the upper ends of the arms 51, 52. In another modification, the ends of a motor-driven roller are mounted within a vertical slot in a frame so as to bear upon the periphery of a winding reel, the unwinding reel being freely mounted within slots above the motor-driven roller upon which it bears. Alternatively the winding and unwinding reels may rotate in contact with each other, their spindles being mounted within vertical slots to allow the movement necessary for the lower reel to bear constantly upon a rotating driving roller.
