Abstract

788,333. Masking tape applying machines, MINNESOTA MINING & MANUFACTURING CO. Aug. 26, 1955 [Aug. 26, 1954], No. 24655/55. Class 73 Relates to a machine for applying adhesive tape to one or more edges of a sheet of paper used for masking purposes in painting operations, the tape being applied to overlap the edges of the paper., so that it can be made to adhere to the surface being painted. According to the invention the supply roll 10 for the paper and the supply roll 15 for the tape are so mounted that the wrap of the tape around a combining roller 20 is less than that of the paper. In the form shown the drum 10 has a brake 41 whereby the paper 11 is put under tension, and the drum is so disposed that the paper will extend through 180 degrees around the roller 20. A bar 40 supports the length of paper passing to the roller. The roll 15 is arranged so that the tape 16 will engage and overlap one edge of the paper, and so that its wrap around the roller 20 will be about 9 degrees. The combined web 31 is drawn off by hand, being supported by a roller 25 and severed by a knife 32. The two rollers may be made in sections so that neither the tape nor the paper will have a propulsion effect upon the other. As shown in the Figures a single machine may incorporate more than one set of supply rolls and associated mechanisms. If non-tacky tape is used a moistening or heating means is disposed between the roller 20 and roll 15, and the roll 15 is fitted with braking means and is placed in a lower position..
