Abstract

545,315. Coating webs. BEAVER, C. J., DAVEY, E. L., and GLOVER & CO., Ltd., W. T. May 26, 1941, No. 6710. [Class 140] The apparatus for coating or impregnating webs described in Specification 373,697, is modified in that the web is first dried by passage over heated surfaces, then passed through a sealed opening into a vacuum tank and thence directly into a liquid at a higher pressure, e.g. atmospheric. A web 3 of paper is drawn from a roll 1 behind a tension roller 4 and around electrically heated rollers 5 and 6, on which it is dried before entry into a vacuum tank 7 through a packed slot 17 (Fig. 3). The slot is packed by a fixed steel bar 20 and an adjustable rubber bar 21. The bar 20 is provided with a rubber gasket 28. The head 29 of bar 21 is held in place by a bar 22 recessed to receive its shank 30, which is fixed by a bar 80. The bar 21 is made adjustable by screws 24 co-operating with brackets 23 on the bar 22. The vacuum tank 7, impregnating tank 42 and the remainder of the apparatus are arranged as described in Specification 373,697.
