A fabric web of thermoplastic material 1 passes round a heating-roller 3 and winding-off roller 5, thence vertically downwards past infrared radiation heating means 7 to the nip 8 between an embossing-roller 9 and a counterpressure roller 10. The roller 3 is adjustable horizontally, and at the same time the roller 5, which is carried on a lever 13 pivoted at the axis 15 of the roller 3, is adjustable along the circumference of the roller 3, so as to vary the distance between the roller 5 and the nip 8 while keeping the path of the web therebetween vertical. The roller 5 is pressed against the roller 3 by a pneumatic device 6.
