Abstract

888,099. Applying reinforcing strips to webs of material. REED CARTONS Ltd. Sept.14, 1960 [June 18, 1959], No. 21012/59. Class 73 Relates to apparatus for adhesively applying reinforcing strips to webs of material, e.g. paper, foil or textiles and.in particular for applying strips of cardboard to webs of paper for the production of carrier bags. According to the invention reinforcing material 4, Fig. 1, is fed continuously by rollers 13 from a reel or other bulk supply at constant speed to cutting means including a rotatable cutter 14 which partially severs the material 4 into strips 17, the connected strips 17 then being fed down over a curved plate 18, Fig. 6, where a rotating snatch member 20 of quadrant shape engages the strips against rollers 22 to grip the lowermost strip and complete its severance. The member 20 then feeds it to arcuate returning fingers 27 and wire brush members 28 which serve to retain each severed strip 17 in the desired alignment, claws 29 pivoted at 30 on the member 20 then engaging the upper edge of the strip to feed it tangentially to a gummed paper web 2 fed over a roller 9. The web 2 with adhering strips 17 then passes between nip rollers 10, Fig. 1, to ensure firm adhesive attachment of the strips. As shown in Fig. 1 three separate units are provided for the attachment of groups of three strips at spaced intervals along the web. Gum is appied to the web 2 by means of a quadrant 7 making intermittent contact with a roller 6 in a bath 5 and having on its surface three bars 8 each of which applies a strip of adhesive to the paper web 2 as its passes on the underside of the roller 9. During severance of the strips 17 by the snatch member 20 pivotally mounted grip fingers 24 controlled by a cam 6 press the connected strips 17 above the lowermost strip against the plate 18 to facilitate severance. The cam 20 and a fixed cam track 31 also controls the movements of the claws 29, the cam 31 serving to withdraw the claws 29 from engagement with the web 2 as the strip 17 is applied.
