[Class 100 (i).] Web controlling or braking mechanism for multiple roll carriers is provided with a brake common to the several rolls adapted to be coupled to each roll so that the braking action can be transmitted to the centres of the rolls. The wet roll carrier, for supporting an active roll A and reserve rolls B, C, comprises a spider 3 having three radial arms, and mounted on a shaft 4. The active roll is subjected to the action of braking straps 6, weighted at 9 and fastened at the lower end to a fixed point. In order to prevent the roll from rotating after the outer layers have been stopped, the spindle of the active roll is controlled independently of the action of the straps 6. The web passes round a roller 26 on a spring-controlled arm 27, when the tension of the web decreases, the arm moves into the position shown in broken lines on the left and causes, through links 18 .. 21, a brake band 16 to be applied to a drum 15. The drum is geared with an idler wheel 11 and wheel 10 on the shaft of the active roll so that the braking.action is transmitted to the centre of the roll. Each wheel 11 is adapted to be moved in and out of gear by nuts 14 and bolts 13.
