389,363. Feeding webs. GOSS PRINTING PRESS CO., 1535, South Paulina Street, Chicago, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Fankboner, H. ; 1535, South Paulina Street, Chicago, U.S.A.) Aug. 2, 1932, No. 21656. Convention date, Dec. 26, 1931. [Class 100 (i).] A web-tensioning mechanism for printing or other machines having a number of web rolls mounted for use in turn as the active roll, comprises brakes on the spindles of the rolls selectively controlled by means responsive to changes of web tension and a brake acting upon the periphery of the active web roll and also controlled by changes of the web tension. As shown in the Figure, the spindles 16 of the rolls 10 are provided with solenoid-actuated brakes adapted to be selectively connected to a controlling circuit 84, as described in Specification 382,383. The circuit 84 includes switch contacts 90, 91 normally held open by one or more fingers 88 engaging the web. When excessive slack in the web or a breakage of the web occurs, the contacts 90, 91 close and the brake is applied to the spindle of the active roll. The active roll is also provided with a peripheral brake comprising belts 25 the tension of which is controlled automatically by means of a pilot roller 48, as described in Specification 354,977. To allow independent yielding of the belts 25 to compensate for inequalities in the surface of the roll, each belt is engaged by a spring-pressed roller 70. In a modification, the solenoid controlling the brake on the spindle of the active roll is continuously excited and controlled, in accordance with changes in the web tension, by means of a rheostat, the arm of which is connected to one of the arms carrying the pilot roller.
