Abstract

352,190. Printing-machines. JAMES, H. V., Cintra, Watford Road, Radlett, Hertfordshire. May 29, 1930, No. 16659. [Class 100 (i).] Web-roll braking-devices.-In a web-roll brake of the kind comprising belts engaging the roll surface and wound on a roller which can be turned to vary the tension of the belts, the roller is geared to one member of an epicyclic gear, a second member of which is driven by an electric motor, and a third member connected to a brake, the braking action of which is variable to cause a variation of the torque applied to the belt roller. In one form, Fig. 3, the belt roller is geared to a spur wheel 1 fast on the carrier 2 of planet wheels 3 gearing with wheels 4, 5 on the shafts 6, 7 of two shunt-wound electrodynamic machines 8, 9 of like characteristic arranged in parallel across the mains. When the machines 8, 9 are driven at the same speed, the carrier 2 and wheel 1 remain stationary. By weakening the field of the machine 8, its speed is increased and the machine 9 is driven as a generator, resulting in a turning movement or tendency to movement being imparted to the wheel 1. In a second form, the shaft 7 is connected to a friction brake instead of the machine 9. To this shaft is connected a brake drum 17, Fig. 6, with which engage friction shoes 31 moved to braking position against the action of springs, by an arm 20 operated by the core 19 of an electromagnet 18, the strength of which is adjustable by means of a variable resistance 22.
