Electric and magnetic; disc.-In a device for braking the paper rolls of rotary printing- machines, the rotating part of a laminated plate brake is arranged on a shaft coupled with the spindle on which the paper roll is mounted, or on a stub axle carrying the paper roll, and the non- rotating part of the brake is adapted to be displaced in an axial direction by means of a braking magnet for the purpose of effecting the braking action. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 2, the gear wheel 6, receiving positive rotation from the web roll, drives through a gear wheel 12 the clutch disc of a laminated plate clutch 28. The armature 17 of the brake magnet 14 and the movable part 15 of the laminated plate clutch are mounted upon a shaft 13. Bv means of a switch current is supplied to the brake magnet 14 simultaneously with the stopping of the machine, the armature 17 is attracted, and the movable part 15 of the laminated plate clutch is pressed against the stationary part 18, the latter being held by pins 19. The intensity of the braking action is adjusted automatically according to the speed of the web roll bv means of a centrifugal regulator which controls resistances mounted on the clutch disc 28, and independently of the speed by manually adjusting a regulating resistance. The braking current is supplied to this regulating resistance by slip rings 21 mounted on the gear wheel 12. In a modification the braking arrangement is formed at the end of the roll spindle itself.
