Abstract
430,554. Feeding webs. JACKSON, L. MELLERSH-, 28, Southampton Buildings, Chancery Lane, London.-(Goss Printing Press Co. ; 1535, South Paulina Street, Chicago, U.S.A.) Aug. 24, 1934, No. 24456. [Class 100 (i)] In a web-renewing apparatus for printing-presses and other machines, having means for driving the reserve roll prior to the joining operation, means governed by the relative speeds of the periphery of the reserve roll and of the running web are provided for controlling the roll driving means so that the speed of the roll is equal to that of the running web. In one form, Fig. 1, the active roll A and reserve rolls B, C are mounted in a frame 1 rotatable to bring the reserve rolls successively into pasting and running positions. A motor 4 for each roll is connected to contact segments 7 rotatable with the frame 1, the segments of the roll in pasting position being connected through brushes 9 to the mains 10 through a manually controlled switch 11 and through a rheostat 52, 53. The rheostat arm 53 is actuated by a differential gear, Fig. 2, one side of which is driven from a roller 13 actuated by the running web 12 and the other side from a roller 14 driven by the roll B. The rollers 13, 14 drive in opposite directions, through bevel gearing, gears 30, 27 secured to sleeves 29, 26 loose upon the shaft 24 and carrying bevel gears 33, 32 engaging planet gears 34 carried by a block 37 fixed to the shaft 34. The shaft 24 carries a pointer 50 and a frictionally held collar 54 to which the rheostat arm 53 is secured. Stops 57 limit the movements of the arm 53, but the shaft 24 is capable of further movements. When the motor 4 is started, the higher speed of the roller 13 causes the shaft 24 to move in a clockwise direction until all the resistance of the rheostat is cut out. The motor speed thereby increases until the speed of the roller 14 exceeds that of the roller 13 when the shaft turns in the opposite direction placing resistance in the motor circuit until the speeds of the rollers 13, 14 are equalized. This condition is indicated by the pointer 50 remaining stationary. In a modification the bevel wheels 27, 30 of the differential gear are replaced by ratchet wheels actuated intermittently by pawls operated by solenoids. Current to the solenoids is controlled by rotary switches 90, 91, Fig. 8, carried by the rollers 13, 14 and having contact segments 92 which bridge contacts 94 in the solenoid circuits. In a further modification, Fig. 4, the reserve roll is driven by a roller 75 operated by gearing from a motor 72 which may be controlled automatically from the differential gear or by a manually operated rheostat 70 according to the position of a switch 71. The roller 75 is mounted on a stationary sleeve eccentric to the shaft 3 carrying the roll frame 1 so that it contacts only with the roll in pasting position.
