[Also in Group XVI] A device for applying marks to travelling web material, e.g. warp thread bands, comprises measuring means for determining the interval between successive marking positions and including exchangeable gearing continuously driven from the material, a marking stamp mounted for rotational movement during which it momentarily contacts one surface of the material and means actuable in dependence upon a predetermined rotational movement of the gearing to rotate the marking stamp. As shown, marking stamps 23a, 23b are resiliently carried by leaf springs 230 mounted on rotatable discs. The discs are rotatable on the shaft of a friction wheel 25 which bears against the material 29 and is rotated thereby as the latter is fed through the machine. The discs carrying the stamps 23a, 23b can be coupled to the shaft for rotation therewith by a slipping friction clutch 26. The discs carry laterally projecting bolts 121a, 121b which are engaged by pawls 21a, 21b to restrain the discs against rotation. The pawls can be raised by electromagnets 20a, 20b so as to allow the discs to be rotated through the clutch 26, the stamps 23a, 23b being then inked by a roller 27 after which they make an impression on the material 29 as it passes over a counter pressure roller 24. The electromagnets are controlled by a measuring device which includes a roller (not shown) mounted on a shaft 6, Fig. 1, and running in contact with the material. The shaft 6 drives, through a chain and sprocket arrangement 7, 5, 8, a gear 9 which meshes with a second gear 10. The gear 10 through a chain drive 11 effects rotation of a pinion 13 meshing with a gear 14 with which are associated cams 14a, 14b having their high points spaced by 180 degrees. The cams actuate switches 15a, 15b in the circuits of the electromagnets 20a, 20b respectively. The gears 9, 10 are readily replaceable by gears of a different ratio and by this means the spacing of the marks made on the material by the stamps 23a, 23b can be regulated. A table showing the gears appropriate for different spacings is provided at 41. Relays are built in to the circuits of the electromagnets and deenergize the latter in time to prevent a second revolution of the stamps. The marking off of lengths of the material 29 may be effected by either or both of the stamps 23a, 23b, selection being by means of switches 42, 45, Fig. 1, and signal lamps 43, 44 indicate the moment of marking by each stamp. An electrically operated counter 47 controlled by the switches 15a, 15b is advanced one unit as each mark is made. A predetermined number of lengths may be set on the counter at 48 and after this number of lengths has been marked off the machine is automatically switched off or a signal is given. The pinion 13 can be temporarily uncoupled from the gear 10 to allow the position of the cams 15a, 15b to be registered with respect to the material before marking commences.
