The present invention relates to printing presses and more particularly to a novel and improved late news printing device for use with high speed rotary newspaper presses. v
Objects and advantages of the invention will be set forth in part hereinafter and in part will be obvious herefrom, the same being realized and attained by means of the instrumentalities and combinations pointed out in the appended claims.
The invention consists in the novel parts, construction, arrangements, combinations and improvements herein shown and described.
The accompanying drawings, referred to herein and constituting a part hereof, illustrate one eml5 bodiment of the invention, and together with the description, serve to explain the principles of the invention.
Of the drawings:
Figure 1 is an end elevation of the present illus- 20 trative embodiment of the invention;
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the mechanism shown in Figure l, with certain .parts broken away;
Figure 3 is a section taken on the line 3-3 of "25 Figure 2; and
Figure 4 is a section taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 3.
The present invention has for its object the provision of a novel and improved printing press 30 provided with late news printing mechanism by which the late news matter may be changed without stopping the running of the web or the production of newspapers. Another object is the provision of a high speed rotary newspaper print- 35 ing press having two late news printing devices adapted for alternative operation and which may be operated simultaneously to print in multicolor. Still another object of the invention is the provision of a printing press having two alternatively 40 and simultaneously operable late news printing devices driven from a common source of power and adapted to be driven only in registering relation with another part of the press, such as the printing cylinders of conventional newspaper 4 printing units.
In accordance with the illustrative embodiment of the present invention, a web of paper, which may be previously printed with the main body of the text by one of the conventional units, is
50 led between a pair of rotary printing couples adapted to print late news upon the proper portion of the web. Means are provided for driving one or the other or both of the printing couples and for moving the silenced impression cylinder 55 away from its printing cylinder and for preventing driving of the silenced printing and impression cylinders. In the illustrative embodiment, differential gearing is driven from the main press driving means and is connected to the impression and printing cylinders of the two late news 5 printing couples, and means are provided for alternatively transmitting power to either or both of the differentials, these means also serving to move the impression cylinder of the corresponding couple into or out of printing contact with its 10 printing cylinder. Means are also provided for stopping the difierential in a predetermined position whenever it is to transmit power so that accurate registration of the corresponding printing couple is always assured. Means are also provided for simultaneously driving both of the late news printing couples and for moving both impression cylinders into printing contact where by separate impressions in different colors may be made by the late news printing couples.
It will be understood that the foregoing general description, and the following detailed description as well, are exemplary and explanatory of the invention, but are not restrictive thereof.
Referring now in detail to the illustrative embodiment of the invention as shown in the drawings, there are provided two late news printing couples comprising the printing cylinders l0 and H and their cooperating impression cylinders l2 and I3, and the web of paper I 4 is passed first between one couple, over the guide rollers l5, and then between the other couple, being printed by either one or both of the two printing couples. Suitable inking means may be provided for supplying ink to the form inking rollers I6.
Printing and impression cylinders It, ll, [2 and I 3 are suitably rotatably journalled in the side frames l8 and i9, and the printing cylinders are adapted to be driven from their impression cylinders by means of the gears 26 fixed to the ends of the cylinder shafts.
Means are provided for driving one or the other, or both, of the printing couples and for this purpose bevel gear 22 is fixed to the drive shaft 23 which is driven from suitable driving means, not shown, such as the usual main horizontaldrive shaft of the press. Gear 22 meshes with a similar bevel gear 24 fixed to one end of shaft 25 which is rotatably journalledin the side frames l8 and I9 andis positioned between the two printing couples. Shaft 25 carries near either side frame l8 and l 9 a differential through which power may be transmitted from the shaft to one or the other or both of the printing couples. Aseinbodied, each differential comprises a bevel 69 mounted on shaft 46.
and serving to drive the impression cylinder whenever'the differential drum 3| is held against rotation.
Means are also provided permitting the impression cylinders to be moved into and out of printing contact with their respective plate cylinders, and as embodied, the impression cylinders are mounted at either end in eccentrics carried in theframe and which may be rotated to space the impression cylinders from the plate cylinders or to move the impression cylinders into printing contact. Eccentrics 36 are provided for the impression cylinder l2 and eccentrics 31 are provided for the impression cylinder l3. The eccentrics 36, one at each end of the impression cylinder l2, are each provided with a toothed segment 38 meshing with pinions 39 carried by shaft 30 which is rotatably journalled in the side frames I8 and I9 andis connected to a handle 4| by which the shaft and eccentrics 36 may be rotated. Suitable means, such as the notched arcuate bar 42, are provided for holding the handle 4| and the eccentrics 36 in either printing or non-printing position. Eccentrics 31 are similarly provided with toothed segments 43 cooperating with pinions 44 mounted on shaft 45 and movable by handle 46.
impression cylinder when it is in printing position. For this purpose, braking means are pro- .vided cooperating with the differential drum 3|,
and adapted to be applied only when the impression cylinder is in printing position with respect to'its plate cylinder. As embodied, a brake band 48L encircles the differential drum 3| near one end thereof and is supported and actuated by flange At one end the brake band 48 is provided with a lug 5|] pivotally supported on pin 5| carried by the flange 49, while at its other end the brake band is connected with the flange-supported pin 52 by means of a turn buckle 53.
These parts are so arranged and positioned that the brake is applied to stop drum 3| and thereby transmit power to the cylinder I2 as handle 4| is moved to impression position. Although the brake band 48 may be ac- .tuat'ed directly from the shaft 40, it is preferably resiliently connected thereto, and for this purpose a spring-55 is coiled about shaft 40 and has its ends connected to flange 49 and a collar 56 which is pinned to shaft '46, thereby resiliently rotating the flange 49 as the shaft 46 is rotated.
In order to secure accurate registration of the late news printing couple with the other couples of the press operating on the web, means are provided for, positively stopping rotation of the differential drum 3| in a definite position, thereby insuring that the printing cylinder I is in exact registration with theother printing cylinders of the press. As embodied, a stop is provided Gear 33 meshes with a gear 35 keyed coacting with the brake band 48 to stop the differential drum 3| in a definite position, this stop being brought into operation by movement of the lever 4| which serves to apply the brake band 48. The stop comprises a three-armed lever 60 pivotally mounted on a stub 6| projecting inwardly from the side frame l8. 7 One arm 62 extends towards the differential drum 3i, and at its forward end is adapted to engage in recess 63 formed in the cylindrical surface of drum 3|, and when so engaged prevents rotation of the drum in one direction. Means are provided for resiliently pressing the stop arm 62 against the drum and intothe recess 63 and for this purpose a spring 64 is connected between the side frame l8 and the arm 65 of lever 66. Means are also provided releasing the stop 62 whenever the brake 48 is released and for this purpose the arm 66 of lever 60 is provided with a cam roller 61 adapted to bear against the peripheral surface of cam'68 fixed to the shaft 46, this cam being so shaped and positioned that the stop is fully withdrawn when the brake is released, and is moved to operative position by application of the brake.
Means are also provided for controlling the application of power to the cylinders l3 and l l, and for this purpose the differential, brake, impression control and positive stop for the differential drum are substantially duplicated, and as these parts are substantial duplicates of those described immediately above, this description will not be repeated.
In the operation of the embodiment described, the cylinder I0 is plated in the usual way with semi-cylindrical stereotype plates which are secured to the surface of the cylinder by means of suitable clamping devices (not shown). The web of paper M, which has already been printed with the major portion of the reading matter or is later to be so printed, passes between the cylinders' ll and i3, out of contact with each other, passes over the guide rollers I and is then led between the printing cylinder iii and its coopgear 20 on the shaft of cylinder ii Power is transmitted through the differential gearing inasmuch as the differential drum 3| and the pinion shafts 29 are held against 'movement by brake bands 68 and stop arm 62. Cylinders l6 and i2 are thus driven at exactly the speed of the other couples of the press operating on the web l4, and
in register therewith.
When it is desired to change the late news, it is necessary toprovide a new stereotype plate or plates which are secured to the cylinder M the same way as the plates are secured to the cylinder Ill. After these plates have been clamped on the cylinder, the operator moves handle ll to inoperative position, and simultaneously therewith moves the handle 36 to operative position. This movement of the handles 6| and 56 moves the cylinder l2 away from its plate cylinder H6, at the same time allowing the corresponding differential to idle, and cylinder I3 is moved into printing contact with its plate cylinder while the correto the cylinders l I and I3 and rotating them in register with the other couples of the press as soon as this stop 62 has engaged in the recess 63. In this way, the printing of the late news may be transferred from cylinder N] to cylinder H without stopping or slowing down the running of the press.
When it is desired to print in multicolor, the cylinders it and II are plated with the proper stereotype plates, and both handles 4! and 46 are moved to impression position, thereby rotating both couples through the two differentials. For multicolor printing, the web l4 may be previously or subsequently printed in one or more colors by the other couples of the press, and in this way it is possible to produce a web printed in four colors or in three colors and perfected in one col-or by the use of the illustrated embodiment of the present invention in connection with a single newspaper unit of conventional design.
The invention in its broader aspects is not limited to the specific mechanisms shown and described but departures may be made therefrom within the scope of the accompanying claims without departing from the principles of the invention and without sacrificing its chief advantages.
