ELECTROMAGNETIC BRAKE.

To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, HENRY VINCENT JAMES, a citizen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, and resident of Cintra, Aldenham avenue, Radlett, Hertfordshire, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electromagnetic Brakes, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to electro-magnetically operated brakes for material feed reels used in connection with textilepaper making and printing machinery, and while applicable to these several purposes is especially designed for use with paper feed reels of rotary web printing presses, in which latter the feed reel is clamped to and carried on a spindle which rotates in bearings on press frame, said bearings being usually uncapped. The said spindle end is fitted with a brake drum and it has been the practice hitherto to inclose the said drum within brake shoes anchored to the press frame and provided with hand operated tensioning means. The brake drum and the brake shoes are usually V shaped and means are provided to enable the braking device to be used as a means to control the lateral movement of the feed reel and spindle in the bearings according to requirements of the material feed and for the purpose generally known as adjustment of side-lay.
An object of my invention is to provide an eiiicient brake so constructed and arranged that the material feed reel spindle and its brake member may be quickly and easily moved into and out of its normal winding or unwinding position without the necessity of dismantling or disturbing the braking means, with the further feature that the braking action will not tend to lift the material feed reel spindle out of the uncapped carrying bearings the said braking means being further adapted for use in multiple in adjacent positions, as in the case of a rotary printing press with magazine feed reel supply, the brake being also adapted to give lateral movement and adjustment to the feed reel as required.
My invention may be described as consisting in the employment of an electro-magnet with normally open magnetic eld and a braking surface, anchored to the machine frame but hinged, cradled and or) spruno, or otherwise supported in such a manner that the magnetic pole pieces face upwardly directly or indirectly to the underside of a drum or other brake member mechanically coupled to the material feed reel through its carrying spindle, such brake member being capable of closing the magnetic circuit or field across the magnet poles. The arrangement is such that pressure will be created between the braking surface of the electromagnet and that of the feed reel brake member and a variable brake on the feed reel be established corresponding to the magnetic flux and pull of the electro-magnet.
A simple form of my invention is that in which the electro-magnet is carried by an extension of one end of its frame which is pivotally mounted on the press frame and supports the electro-magnet with its poles directed vertically upwardly. The other end of the magnet frame is spring-controlled and held in proximity to the drum preferably with a lining of some material vsuch as that sold under the trade mark of Ferodo between them. Upon excitation of the electro-magnet an attractive effort is Set up between its poles and the brake member resulting in the braking surface forming part of the electro-magnetic brake being pressed against. the brake member and a brake developed accordingly. It will be observed that this pressure on the drum is created by magnetic attraction in a downward direction and therefore has no tendency to lift the reel upwardly. Any suitable means for holding the electro-magnet frame within limited movement may be employed and means provided whereby lateral movement may be imparted by it to the brake drum.
I will now describe my invention with reference to the accompanying drawings in which four views of one example are illustrated.
Figure l shows the brake in side elevation with the brake drum and its spindle out of their bearings and resting on the side frame of the machine, a position they would take up during` the process of reel replacement to the printing press. rlhis drawing shows the reel on the spindle which is now ready to be pushed to its bearing.

Fig. 4 is a top plan view with the brake drum removed showing magnetic pole pieces and central braking element with cradle, hinge and suspension, and means for movement of the whole correspondingly to the lateral movement of the reel spindle and brake drum.
The side frame 1 of the printing machine carries bearings 2, one only is seen, adapted to receive the reel spindle 3 on which the reel of Ipaper or other material l is mounted and is supported thereon on each side by a corrugated cone or wedge which, after it is driven into position, is locked by the collar 6, all these parts being usual in reel fed printing machines.
The electro-magnet 7 is mounted in a cradle 8 which at one end is supported by a hand screw 9 carried by an arm 10 and by the side frame and its other end is suspended on a spring 11. The braking surface 12 is radiused correspondingly to the brake drum and the magnet pole pieces 14e-14 machined to slightly greater radiusand the former is tted with a braking element 12 of suitable coefficient of friction.
The brake drum 13 is keyed or otherwise fixed to the spindle 3 and its face fits closely to the surface of the lining 12 so that when the magnet is energized the drum partially closes the magnetic field of the electro-magnet and the braking action is established and is variable7 controlled by the amount of electrical energy fed to the magnet.
The electro-magnet is shown supported between side frames 8--8 and lugs 15-15 project upwardly therefrom and serve to center the brake drum over the magnet. Anti-friction rollers or ball bearings could be employed in place of the lugs.
It will be evident that the electro-magnet as a whole is movable upon the screw 9 by which side-lay is adjusted and which acts as a pivot for the spring 11 serving to return the magnet to its normal position after depression.
This freedom of movement not only permits the requisite pressure and consequent brake between the brake drum and the electro-magnet when the latter is eXcited but permits the spindle 3 to be moved into and out of its bearings without any alteration of adjustment of the electro-magnet which being depressible will allow the drum to be rolled over along its face in the operations of reel replacement.
It is unnecessary to cap the bearing 2 when the spindle is in and the machine running although the bearings may be temporarily covered to permit a spindle to be rolled over the top which is frequently done in multi-reel machines.
The method of adjustment of side-lay may be as required, and the faces of the brake drum and of the electro-magnet braking device may be of any suitable contour.
Various modifications can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention and within the scope of the following claims.
lWhat I claim and ters Patent is 1. Brake mechanism for material feed reels, comprising an electro-magnetic brake shoe having open magnetic field, a feed reel brake member normally adjacent to the brake shoe and capable of closing the magnetic field of the brake shoe, and mechanical means for automatically holding the brake shoe in contact with the brake member in a manner capable of developing a brake torque on same and allow of any handling of the brake member into and out of its normal or reel unwinding position without the necessity of any handling of the electro-magnetic brake shoe.
2. Brake mechanism for material feed reels, comprising a flexibly-supported electro-magnetic brake shoe having open magnetic field, a brake member mounted adjacent to and adapted to close its magnetic iield for the purpose of a brake and a feed reel bar carrying said brake member; in combination with a reel carrying arm for supporting the reel bar and brake member while moving into or out of their normal or reel unwinding position without mechanical adjustment or handling of the electro-magnetic brake shoe.
3. Brake mechanism for material feed reels, comprising an electro-magnetic brake shoe having open magnetic field, a feed reel brake member capable of closing the niagnetic field of the brake shoe for the purpose of a feed reel brake, and means for setting the adjustment of said parts, and mechanical means for automatically assuring the movement relation and separation of the brake member and brake shoe without alteration of the set adjustment corresponding to a given brake torque.

Brake mechanism for material feed reels, comprising an electro-magnetic brake shoe having open magnetic eld, a feed reel brake member capable of closing the magnetic field of the brake shoe for the purpose of a brake when in its normal working position, a feed reel bar riding in uncapped bearings and carrying said brake member, and means to normally contact the brake shoe and brake member, the combination in desire to secure by Letsuch manner resulting that the energizing of the electro-magnetic brake shoe will not have any tendency to lift the brake memberI and its carrying bar or shaft out of the unca-pped bearings.
5. Brake mechanism for material 'feed reels, comprising a brake member on the spindle oit' a feed reel, an electromagnet po sitioned below the said member with its poles directed upwardly thereto, a carrier tor the said electromagnet and means for adjusting said carrier to regulate the position of the magnet in relation to the brake member.
6. Brake mechanism for material feed reels, comprising a brake member on a spindle ot a feed reel, a resil.iently-mounted electromagnet positioned below the said member with its poles directed upwardly thereto, and means for adjusting the position of the magnet in relation to the brake member.

Brake mechanism for material feed reels, comprising a brake member on a spindle of a feed reel, an electromagnet positioned below the said member with its poles directed upwardly thereto, a carrier for the said electromagnet and means for adjusting the carrier, and the magnet in relation to the brake member both vertically and horizontally.
8. Brake mechanism for material feed reels, comprising a brake member on a spindle of a feed reel, a resiliently-mount ed electromagnet positioned below the said member with its poles directed upwardly thereto, and means for regulating the position of the magnet in relation to the brake member both vertically and horizontally.
9. Brake mechanism for material feed reels, comprising a brake member on a spindle of a` feed reel, a depressibly mounted 'frame positioned below the said spindle, an electromagnet, a brake shoe connected with said magnet and positioned in close proximity to the aforesaid brake member to contact therewith when the magnet is energized, and flexible means, to permit the lowering of the said frame, and brake shoe upon moif'ing the said brake member,l into and out of its aforesaid normal position in relation to the said brake shoe.
