Abstract
740,421. Grinding the ends of coiled springs. LEWIS SPRING CO., Ltd. Aug. 27, 1954 [Aug. 27, 1953], No. 23655/53. Class 60 A machine for grinding the ends of coiled springs comprises horizontal grinding wheels 10, 11 driven independently by electric motors 102, 112. The gap between the opposed faces of the wheels is varied by adjustment of the wheel spindles by handwheels 101, 111. Radially arranged arms 13 are fixed at their inner ends to a vertical spindle 14 driven through speed reduction gearing 17 and bevel gearing 18 by an electric motor 16. The arms 13 are located above a stationary bed plate 15 provided with an upstanding rirri 151; the distance of the arms 13 above the plate 15 may be adjustable. Each radial arm 13 has associated with the outer end thereof gripping means comprising jaws 132, 133. The inner jaw 132 is slidable on parallel pins 134 projecting outwardly from the outer end of the arm 13, the jaw being pressed outwardly by strong springs 135. The outer jaw 133, which has a rounded surface 136, is carried by pins 137 axially slidable within holes in the inner jaw 132 against the opposition of weak springs 138 tending to urge the jaws apart. The jaws are provided centrally with opposed semi-cylindrical recesses 13a, 13b to receive a spring 19 being ground. Located partially in the space between the grinding wheels 10, 11 is a fixed plate 20 having an arcuate surface 201 concentric with the spindle 14, the radius of curvature being less than the length of the arms 13 when the jaws 132, 133 are open; the surface 201 extends from a position in advance of that where the springs 19 enter the space between the grinding wheels to a position in retard of that where the springs 19 leave that space. The inner surface of the upstanding rim 151 on the plate 15 has a radius of curvature substantially equal to the length of the arms 13 when the jaws 132, 133 are fully open. Immediately prior to the entry end of the arcuate surface 201 there is disposed above the radial arms 13 an adjustable pressure plate 22 provided at its entry end with an upwardly inclined section 221.
