Alternating-current induction machines.-A rotary device for automatically short-circuiting resistance in starting an electric motor consists of a sealed casing A hollowed out to form two or more annular grooves G', G<2> containing two or more half-turns of a continuous resistance wire B, and a quantity of mercury or other conducting liquid M free to be spnead out along the grooves by centrifugal force. The casing which is attached to the motor shaft x, may be made of toughened glass, and may be filled with inert gas at low pressure. Any number of casings may be employed. The device may be assembled in the rotor frame of the machine to be controlled.
