[Class 35] Machine tools and other machines are driven at variable speeds by using a part of the machine as the rotor R of a polyphase induction motor, whose stator M is segment shaped or is made up of a number of segment shaped parts ; the windings have tappings which are led out to a change-over switch, so that the pole pitch may be varied. The windings may be in delta or other form.
