Abstract
608,197. Induction motors. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and DUNHAM, C. R. Feb. 18, 1946, No. 5039. [Class 35] A polyphase induction machine is adapted to act as a pump for electrically-conducting fluids, e.g. mercury, by the provision of a large magnetic gap occupied by a stationary spiral baffle for guiding the fluid round the central core member. As shown, the outer member 1 which carries windings 4 to produce a rotating field has a glass or other liquid-resisting sleeve 6 having inlet and outlet tubes 7, and the laminated central member 8 has a spiral strip of iron 11 fixed round its periphery by welding or by its own spring action. Several strips or tubes may be used and the whole conducting liquid acts as a squirrel cage, the liquid-filled spaces 9 or additional means serving as end rings. A further envelope may exclude liquid from the central member.
