Abstract

Fuel, feeding; cooling.-The fuel in a furnace hopper is moistened at regular intervals to a greater or lesser degree according as it is desired to prevent combustion of the fuel in the lower part of the hopper under light loads or to obtain better combustion of the fuel in the furnace. Water is supplied to the hopper 2 through a shielded perforated pipe 10 fed from a pipe 14 having a valve 34 adapted to be opened by water pressure and closed by a weighted lever 22 resting on a roller 38 attached to the valve spindle 36. One end of the lever 22 is pivoted to a nut 20 adapted to be adjusted vertically by a screw 18 to vary the distance between a roller 26 and a cam 28 driven by a motor 30. By varying the position of the roller the duration for which the valve 34 is opened and water supplied to the hopper is varied accordingly. The position of the nut 20 may be varied by hand or automatically in accordance with the fuel supply or load. The apparatus may be combined with a system by which the front of the grate or furnace is cooled by jets of water supplied intermittently.
