The deadplate is fitted with a flap valve a, the closing of which is automatically controlled by a dash-pot. The plate c is formed in one or more sections and is adapted to be tilted or otherwise moved by means of its supporting rods q, which are pivoted at t. A fire-brick baffle v is preferably arranged behind the fire-bridge.
