Abstract

276,829. Heenan & Froude, Ltd., and Walker, G. H. Sept. 1, 1926. Dynamometers, rotaryabsorption. - Relates to hydraulic apparatus of the type described in Specification 24949/10 and consists in the provision of means whereby the radial depth of water forming the vortex in the pockets or cups can be positively regulated independently of the rate of supply of water to the cups. The stator A is formed with vanes forming cups or pockets a<1> and a rotor B formed with two sets of vanes forming cups b<1> air passages and water passages being provided in one or more vanes of the stator. One of the cups a' in the stator is provided with guides c radiating outwards from the centre of the vortex. A plate c is moved in the guides by a screw c<2> and in the position shown has the edge c<1> at the centre of the vortex. By sliding the plate outwards the edge c<1> forms a weir over which part of the water spills into a chamber a<4> formed in the cup by a web a<5> and which communicates by a passage a<6> with an outlet for the water. When the plate c is in the " open " position there is practically no radial depth of water in the vortex. Where two plates c are employed the screws may be geared together by a chain d and they may be operated from one hand-wheel D. In a modification a tube closed at the outer end and open at the vortex end may project into the vortex, ports in the, tube communicating with a chamber arranged just outside the stator. Two of these may be operated by chain and screw gear as before. In another modification, the two tubes are connected by a cross-head which is operated by a screw.
