Abstract

274,210. Imray, O. Y., (International Motor Co.). April 19, 1926. Universal joints.- a non-metallic centering device for holding the axes of universally coupled shafts against lateral displacements other than relative angular movements, is held in or on seats on the respestive shaft ends in such a manner as to be distorted internally when accommodating such universal movements. The arrangement is shown applied to shaft sections a, c which are universally coupled by a ring k of non-metallic flexible material bolted to flanges a<1>, c<1>, the non metallic centering ring f being fitted on to a stub a<2> coaxially connected to the shaft a and seating within a coaxial recess c<2> formed in the hub of the flange c'. The ring is preferably of rubber comprising a yielding centre mass f<3> with inner and outer hard rings f<1>, f<2> vulcanized thereto, but may be of cork, rubberized fabric &c. The action of the device may be supplemented by the attachment of the stub a<2>, as shown, to a deformable diaphragm g attached to a carrier ring h by which it is bolted to the flange a<1>; the diaphragm flexing under excessive stresses.
