Hydrocarbons, distilling. - In distilling coaltar, the tar is first heated to prevent condensation of steam therein and is then subjected to the direct mechanical action of steam at as low a temperature as possible in order to drive off in separate stages first the light oil and water, and subsequently substantially pine naphthalene, the steam supply being then discontinued and external heat applied to drive off the middle and heavy oils substantially free from naphthalene. Superheated steam is forced through a pipe b and an injector tube c covered with a hood e provided with lateral opening d in a still a containing tar preheated by burners h. Above the still is arranged a column i and diphlegmator k from which the vapours pass to a condenser m, the condensate flowing through an inspection pot n to receivers o. Substantially pure naphthalene separates out in the receivers o, the liquids being decanted off.
